What to clarify before connecting a website to another service

Choose the source of truth

If stock changes both on the website and in an inventory system, decide which information takes precedence. Define whether data moves one way or changes in both systems. Otherwise conflicts and duplicates may appear.

Check the interfaces

Look for an API, documentation, test access and plan limits. File exchange may work without an API, but has different timing and validation needs. The external service’s availability matters too.

• Which objects and fields need to move?
• How are products, customers or orders matched?
• How often should exchange happen?
• What happens after errors or repeated requests?

Draw the flow and test

Agree on a small dataset, access permissions and error reporting before the integration changes the live catalogue or real orders. That makes the scope easier to assess.
